Historically, Restless Leg Syndrome has been going unreported or ignored simply because many are not even aware of its existence yet, it affects millions of people each year. Short of the sufferers description of their symptoms, there are no known methods to diagnose or medical means to confirm the disease. In effect, there is considerable resistance from both the medical community, as well as, patients to recognize this condition as a disease. Based on reports from the RLS Foundation, this disease continues to be widely unknown and vastly misunderstood.
Those who suffer from RLS experience a wide range of discomfort in their legs resulting in an uncontrollable urge to move them in order to feel some level of relief. This condition has historically not received the same level of urgency as other conditions primarily due to it not being life threatening. But, this condition can be so severe that it changes lives.
In the interest of learning more about this condition, the RLS Foundation performed some studies involving over eleven hundred volunteers and discovered that nearly two thirds of the participants never even heard of RLS. However, when they were described the symptoms of RLS it appeared that they or someone they knew were actually sufferers themselves and did not even realize it.
Today’s medical community, under the direction of The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), continue to try to identify the root cause of the disease in hopes that this discovery will lead to a permanent cure. Their objective is to better understand this disease that will lead to improved methods to diagnose and treat this condition. Additionally, these attempts have given good cause to believe that this disease is genetic due to the number of family members who share in the symptoms.
However, just recently a major medical institute conducted controlled studies on over five thousand volunteers, from ages 25 to 75, to discover the root cause allowing them to develop a real cure. What they discovered is that RLS is tied to the central nervous system. Additionally, 93.7% of those suffering from RLS share in a bodily deficiency. Their bodies failed to produce a sufficient amount of a critical mineral. A mineral that was found in abundance in the bodies of those who did not suffer from this condition.
With increased public awareness and more acceptance within the medical community, giant leaps are being made towards real solutions. Some medical researchers are in the process of developing a hypothesis that there is a relationship between RLS and diseases such as Parkinson’s and Diabetes. What they have discovered is that the treatment assigned to these diseases have provided a measurable level of relief for sufferers therefore, lending some truth to their assumptions.
With no real therapeutic or medical solutions available, the medical community continues to resist the use of prescription drugs. This condition is not life threatening and the drugs used to suppress the symptoms comes associated with some very serious warning labels. Additionally, a condition known as augmentation is also a very serious concern. It appears that the medications used to treat RLS tend to become less effective in time. The relief offered by prescription medication tends to wear off or the symptoms begin to return earlier the following day leaving the medical practitioner to prescribe additional and even more dangerous drugs.
As this condition becomes more accepted within the medical community, the reality of its symptoms are being taken more seriously. This is a life changing event in a person’s life which tends to get even worse with age. There are no conventional means for a cure in sight but, due to the foresight of some very caring medical professionals, there is some real hope in alternative solutions. With all our medical knowledge, we need to find some viable solutions for these unfortunate sufferers real quick….it’s hard to imagine the level of suffering unless you have experienced this condition yourself.
